The portal of Electronic Information Service (EIS), which was developed within the frame of TÁMOP-4.2.5-09/1-2010-0002 application won by Educatio Public Services Non-profit LLC, is awaiting regular and new visitors with impressive design, simple access, and user friendly applications. The beginnings of the portal can be traced back to 2002, so gathering ten years’ experiences, satisfying all sorts of needs it can supply Hungarian higher education and academic life with resources and background information.

The aim of Electronic Information Service (EIS) is to buy electronic information indispensable for higher education and scientific research centrally, on national licence bases. The result is that EIS can supply essentially more information than before.

EIS is an important element of the higher education development program, as it significantly increases the competitiveness of Hungarian higher education institutes and non-profit research institutes in the international academic life, and enhances equal opportunities in accessing information. EIS was established to maintain accessibility of electronic content, to purchase and to make accessible data bases containing large-value international scientific information. Maintaining EIS National Program is necessary for the functioning of national research. Serving data bases at the national level within the frame of EIS Basic Program is an organic part of research infrastructure; it includes bibliographic data and full text of current periodicals, articles, scientific publications, data bases necessary to research.

The program changed into a consortium in 2009, covering a wider range of data bases than before. Accumulated experiences have proved that the operation of a consortium ensures the most favourable bargaining power and quality services.

Developing and widening EIS – within the frame of TÁMOP 4.2.5 preferential project – go through. The most important change that affects users is that students and researchers of a given institute may have access to the data bases applied for and supported by the institute. Access to the data bases is only possible within the IP range of the institute, but we are going to prepare conditions of individual users’ access.
